Engine Accessory Noise Diagnostics — and the drive belt
There's a squeal, hum or squeak from under the bonnet that changes with engine speed or when the A/C comes on. We listen to the engine in different modes, remove the drive belt and check the pulleys, tensioner, alternator, water pump and other units one by one. The check takes about an hour.

Can I drive if the belt is squealing?
Not for long. If the belt breaks, the alternator stops working, and on many cars so do the water pump and power steering, so the repair shouldn't be put off.
How long do the diagnostics take?
About an hour. If the noise only appears while driving, we check it on the road.
What usually needs replacing?
Most often the drive belt, pulleys or tensioner, less often an alternator bearing or the water pump. We name the exact part after the check.
